SB 324 Truancy.

Introduced by: R. Edward Houck | all patrons    ...    notes | add to my profiles

SUMMARY:

Truancy. Reduces the number of unexplained consecutive absences from five to three for a child to be reported to the attendance officer. A child must also be reported if his unexplained absences total five scheduled school days per month or an aggregate of seven scheduled school days per school calendar quarter, whichever occurs sooner. The bill increases the penalties for: (i) inducing, or attempting to induce, a child to be absent from school, (ii) violating compulsory school attendance laws, and (iii) permitting a child to be habitually absent from school to a Class 3 misdemeanor ($500 fine) from a Class 4. The bill also imposes upon a school attendance officer the duty to develop lists of children not enrolled in school, a duty which is currently performed by the division superintendent.
