SB 254 Fair Housing Law; enforcement by localities.

Introduced by: Charles J. Colgan | all patrons    ...    notes | add to my profiles

SUMMARY:

Virginia Fair Housing Law; enforcement by localities. Provides that the governing bodies of any county, city, or town may enact ordinances in accordance with the Virginia Fair Housing Law if such ordinances were (i) enacted prior to September 30, 1992, and (ii) submitted to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for a determination of substantial equivalency. The current deadlines for both actions were July 1, 1992. The bill, requested by the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, will permit the County's Human Rights Commission to enforce state and federal fair housing requirements. Because the Commission was created 60 days after the current deadlines, it has no enforcement authority and can only seek voluntary compliance with such fair housing requirements. The bill will also qualify the County for federal grant money to investigate, resolve, and enforce fair housing complaints.
