1996 SESSION
HB 911 Podiatry; definition.
Introduced by: Eric I. Cantor | all patrons ... notes | add to my profiles
SUMMARY:
Podiatry; definition. Expands the definition to include amputation proximal to the metatarsal phalangeal joints but requires that such surgery be performed in an accredited hospital or surgery center. The definition specifically excludes amputation of the entire foot. Podiatrists currently may remove diseased tissue or bone from anywhere in the foot and may amputate toes, but not at the same time. Frequently surgical decisions cannot be made until the procedure is under way, thereby exposing the patient to additional surgery, anesthesia and cost. Requiring such dual procedures to take place in an accredited hospital or surgery center will improve quality of care. Five surrounding states have similar provisions with regard to location or definitions which exclude amputation of the entire foot.
