Introduced by: R. Creigh Deeds | all patrons    ...    notes | add to my profiles

SUMMARY:

Parental responsibility. Allows the use of the court's contempt power to enforce orders under a proceeding against a parent who refuses to ensure that his child is attending school and increases the penalty for parental violations relating to compulsory school attendance, tuition payments for nonresident students and truancy from a Class 4 misdemeanor to a Class 3 misdemeanor. The bill adds a new section which reiterates the authority of the court to order the parents and the juvenile to participate in programs and counseling and clarifies the court's authority to order payment by the parents. The bill also clarifies that the court has the authority to summon and force a parent to appear in court with his child.
