SUMMARY:

Motor vehicle insurance. Requires insurance companies to electronically transmit monthly reports to the Department of Motor Vehicles regarding the coverage status of their insured drivers operating vehicles registered in Virginia. The bill authorizes the Commissioner to compare the electronically transmitted insurance reports with vehicle information on file at the Department of Motor Vehicles to verify if motor vehicles are properly insured. This bill further provides that persons who fail to pay their uninsured motor vehicle fee and do not immediately surrender their license plates shall be guilty of a Class 3 misdemeanor. This bill is a duplicate of SB 554.
