SUMMARY:

Vehicle certificates of title, registration cards, salvage/nonrepairable certificates, and identification numbers, decals and devices. Applies a penalty (Class 6 felony: imprisonment for 1 to 5 years, or jail for up to 12 months, a fine of not more than $2,500 or both the jail time and the fine) for forging vehicle titles, or forging or counterfeiting salvage/nonrepairable certificates; eliminates the requirement to obtain a new title when a vehicle's engine is changed; requires an application for new vehicle identification numbers for vehicles whose identification numbers are removed or become illegible; prohibits removal of identification numbers, decals, or devices from vehicles and vehicle parts; and prohibits possession of vehicles whose identification numbers are removed or tampered with. This bill is intended to be a duplicate of SB 103. Two amendments, however, will be required to SB 103 to make these bills exact copies of one another.
