Commending the employees of the Virginia Department of Transportation.

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia faced a massive assault by the weather which blanketed the state from east to west and north to south with one of the heaviest snowfalls of this century; and

WHEREAS, thousands of miles of Virginia's roadways were covered by accumulations of over two feet of snow, with greater depths in some regions of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, winds blew as strong as 26 knots causing drifting snow including drifts up to twelve feet in mountainous areas; and

WHEREAS, the elements continued to distribute this precipitation over an extended period of four days; and

WHEREAS, despite this onslaught by mother nature, the employees of the Virginia Department of Transportation steadfastly performed snow removal operations, often working up to twenty-four hour shifts, to successfully keep open all of Virginia's primary and interstate routes for essential and emergency travel during this blizzard; and

WHEREAS, during this time, the Virginia Department of Transportation's Highway Help Line assisted over 100,000 citizens of the Commonwealth by advising them of road conditions and responding to calls for emergency road clearings now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the employees of the Virginia Department of Transportation whose dedication and skillful care of our roadways enabled numerous medical emergency missions to be performed, many stranded Virginians to be delivered from dangerous situations, and essential services to continue during the snow emergency of January 6-13, 1996.
