SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 79
Commending the Hampton High School football team.

Agreed to by the Senate, January 25, 1996
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 2, 1996

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth's most successful high school football team, the Crabbers from Hampton High School, won five state championships during the 1980s; and

WHEREAS, uncharacteristically, Coach Mike Smith's Crabbers had been shut out in the 1990s--until 1995, when they won Hampton High School's 13th state championship; and

WHEREAS, by defeating E. C. Glass High School of Lynchburg by the decisive score of 35-7, the Crabbers won the Virginia High School League Group AAA, Division 5, state championship; and

WHEREAS, Coach Smith's eighth state title in his 25 years at Hampton, the 1995 version was won with a typical blend of offensive firepower and smothering, hard-hitting defense; and

WHEREAS, the Crabbers gained 271 yards passing against E. C. Glass, a record for a state championship game, and combined passing proficiency with an effective running attack that produced three touchdowns; and

WHEREAS, the Hampton defense, which harassed the Glass quarterback all day, was instrumental in the dominant victory; and

WHEREAS, Hampton High School's return to its accustomed position at the top of Virginia high school football was accomplished through inspired coaching, talented athletes, and the unflagging support of the Hampton High School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Hampton High School Crabbers on their 1995 state football championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Mike Smith in honor of the superlative performance of the Hampton High School football team.
