SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 67 Offered January 22, 1996 Requesting the Joint Commission on Health Care and the State Corporation Commission's Bureau of Insurance to study the appropriate role of the agencies of the Commonwealth in monitoring, policing, and regulating the managed care industry. ----------

WHEREAS, the health care industry is undergoing sweeping change in an effort to decrease health care costs; and

WHEREAS, the marketplace is determined to maximize cost-saving efficiencies through various forms of managed care; and

WHEREAS, purchasers and beneficiaries of managed care health insurance plans are seeking safeguards to ensure the protection of elements of the health care delivery system including, but not limited to, the integrity of the provider-patient relationship, the right of patient privacy, the freedom to choose a health care provider, and the viability of the individual and small group practices of health care providers in underserved areas; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the Joint Commission on Health Care and the Bureau of Insurance be requested to jointly study the appropriate role of the agencies of the Commonwealth of Virginia in monitoring, policing, and regulating the managed care industry.

The Joint Commission on Health Care and the State Corporation Commission's Bureau of Insurance shall complete their work in time to submit their findings and recommendations to the Governor and the 1997 Session of the General Assembly as provided in the procedures of the Division of Legislative Automated Systems for processing legislative documents.
