SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 33
Commending the John Handley High School girls' tennis team.

WHEREAS, the girls' tennis team from Winchester's John Handley High School capped an undefeated 1995 season by winning the Virginia High School League Group AA state tennis championship; and

WHEREAS, the 1995 Judges from Handley High School, led by seniors Michelle Biggs, Natalie Jenkins, Cate Shea, and Ilka Veltrup, were dominant in the regular season, winning all of their matches by convincing margins; and

WHEREAS, Head Coach Chris Garber and Assistant Coach Leslie Boyd also got inspired performances from junior Courtney Hinman, sophomores Sarah Bromley, Alison Cole, Elizabeth Kern, and Catherine Pettit, and freshmen Whitney Wetsel, Steffany Slaughter, and Laura Zoller; and

WHEREAS, in the Northwest District tournament, the Handley girls defeated teams from Fauquier High School and Osbourn High School to advance to the Region II tournament, where they swept three straight matches; and

WHEREAS, in the state tournament, the Handley Judges faced strong teams from Marion and Lakeland High Schools, defeating both by 5-4 scores to capture the state Group AA crown; and

WHEREAS, the season-long excellence of the Handley girls' tennis team brings credit to the players, their coaches, and the entire Winchester community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly salute the girls' tennis team from John Handley High School on its exceptional 1995 season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Chris Garber as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations to the Handley Judges on their well-earned state championship.
