WHEREAS, Carter DeWitt Martin, a 15-year veteran of the Lynchburg Fire Department, died on June 22, 1995; and

WHEREAS, a firefighter with a reputation for putting himself in harm's way to save others, Carter Martin died in the line of duty, swept away by floodwaters caused by the collapse of the Timber Lake Dam; and

WHEREAS, well-known for his extraordinary dedication to his community, Carter Martin was a member of the Brookville-Timberlake Volunteer Fire Department and was devoted to Brookville High School, from which he graduated in 1972; and

WHEREAS, Carter Martin served as president of Brookville High School's athletic booster club and as an assistant coach of the football team; and

WHEREAS, on the violently stormy night of June 22nd, floodwaters had stranded three cars on the bridge over Buffalo Creek, and rescue personnel were uncertain whether the cars were occupied; and

WHEREAS, in his typically selfless manner, Carter Martin, tethered to shore by a rope, ventured on to the bridge and was examining the cars when a sudden rush of water swept him away; and

WHEREAS, Carter Martin leaves a legacy of dedication, commitment, and tireless effort on behalf of his neighbors and his community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the untimely passing of an heroic public servant, Carter DeWitt Martin; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Carter DeWitt Martin as an expression of the General Assembly's deepest sympathy and great respect for his memory.
