SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 1 On the death of Hiram L. Thompson.

WHEREAS, Hiram L. Thompson, a retired educator who taught in the Henrico County Public Schools for over 40 years, died on July 25, 1994; and

WHEREAS, a native of the City of Richmond, Hiram Thompson was educated in the Richmond public schools, graduated from Armstrong High School, earned his bachelor's degree from Virginia Union University, and a master's degree from Columbia University; and

WHEREAS, Hiram Thompson's long and distinguished teaching career was interrupted only by World War II, during which he served in the U.S. Army; and

WHEREAS, for 33 years, Hiram Thompson taught at the Virginia Randolph High School in Henrico County, where he sponsored many senior classes; and

WHEREAS, when Virginia Randolph was converted to other uses, Hiram Thompson transferred to J. R. Tucker High School, where he taught English until his retirement in 1974; and

WHEREAS, Hiram Thompson's affection for his students was the hallmark of his 43-year teaching career, and many of his former students stayed in touch with him long past their student days and even after his retirement; and

WHEREAS, Hiram Thompson was an active member of the Riverview Baptist Church, where he served for many years as organist, taught the men's Bible class, and organized the men's choir in the church Senior Center; and

WHEREAS, Hiram Thompson leaves a distinguished record of service to his community, the Commonwealth, and the nation, and his most lasting legacy lives on in the countless students whose lives he touched, influenced, and improved; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of a distinguished Virginian, Hiram L. Thompson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Hiram L. Thompson as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
