WHEREAS, Sara E. F. Markham, a model of civic involvement and a tireless champion of numerous civic, charitable, and religious organizations, died March 6, 1993, at the age of 75; and
WHEREAS, Sara E. F. Markham's life has been dedicated to service and has enriched the lives of children, the ill, the impoverished, European refugees, and the victims of war; and
WHEREAS, Sara E. F. Markham began her civic service in 1940 and 1941 by teaching English to refugees from Europe; and
WHEREAS, during World War II, Sara E. F. Markham volunteered at both the Medical College of Virginia Hospital and the USO; and
WHEREAS, after the war, Sara E. F. Markham led a pilot loan project providing home medical care equipment for indigent patients at low rates, which program expanded steadily after her involvement and was turned over to the United Givers Fund; and
WHEREAS, Sara E. F. Markham founded and served as the first president of the Richmond Children's Museum, organizing its first board of directors and coordinating its fund-raising efforts; and
WHEREAS, the Richmond YWCA in 1989 honored Sara E. F. Markham's work to establish and fund the Children's Museum by naming her "Outstanding Woman of the Year in the Field of Art"; and
WHEREAS, in the early 1990s, working with the New York office of the American Joint Distribution Committee, Sara E. F. Markham organized a humanitarian relief effort in Richmond to secure plastic and medical supplies for the Bosnian population in war-torn Sarajevo; and
WHEREAS, in November 1992, in response to Sara E. F. Markham's efforts, eight tons of plastic were shipped through the cooperation of Richmond's corporate community to replace windows destroyed in shelling in Sarajevo and to provide protection from winter weather; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of Sara E. F. Markham, a Virginian and humanitarian of boundless energy and generosity; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sara E. F. Markham in honor of her lifetime of service to the citizens of the Commonwealth.
