WHEREAS, with its convincing victory over the University of Texas, 28-10, in the 1995 Sugar Bowl, Virginia Tech's football team completed its most successful season ever, finishing for the first time with a top-10 ranking by the Associated Press; and
WHEREAS, the turnaround in the Hokies' football fortunes, from a losing record in 1992 to three straight bowl appearances in 1993, 1994, and 1995, can be credited largely to Head Coach Frank Beamer; and
WHEREAS, a native of North Carolina, Frank Beamer grew up in Hillsville, Virginia, where he starred in three sports at Hillsville High School, including football; and
WHEREAS, from 1966-1968, Frank Beamer was a star defensive back on Coach Jerry Claiborne's Virginia Tech teams, appearing in two Liberty Bowl games for the Hokies and winning All-Virginia Big Five Team honors in his senior season; and
WHEREAS, after assistant coaching stints at the University of Maryland, The Citadel, and Murray State University, Frank Beamer got his first taste of head coaching at Murray State, where he completed a successful career with an Ohio Valley co-championship in 1986; and
WHEREAS, in 1987, Frank Beamer returned to his alma mater as head football coach, and over the past nine years he has guided the ever-improving Hokies to their most successful seasons; and
WHEREAS, Frank Beamer is recognized as a person who reflects the true values of honesty and integrity in college athletics; and
WHEREAS, the 1995 Hokies won their first Big East Conference championship; defeated their arch-rivals from West Virginia University and the University of Virginia; defeated traditional Big East power University of Miami; finished the season with 10 consecutive victories; and earned national recognition and respect with a convincing victory over the Texas Longhorns in New Orleans on New Year's Eve; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of his tremendous abilities as a head football coach, Frank Beamer was named Big East Conference Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Bear Bryant Award recognizing the top college football coach in the nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer on his tremendous coaching success and the outstanding performance of the 1995 Hokies football team; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Coach Frank Beamer as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his stellar coaching career and best wishes for the continued success of the Hokies from Virginia Tech.
