WHEREAS, in post-season tournament basketball, where regular season records count for little, it is often the team on a winning streak that takes home the trophy; and
WHEREAS, the 1995-96 Gators from Saint Gertrude High School in Richmond, a young team that entered the League of Independent Schools Division I tournament seeded fourth, peaked at the right time; and
WHEREAS, the young women of Saint Gertrude's, led by the team's lone senior, came together at the end of the season to sweep the tournament and win the League of Independent Schools Division I championship; and
WHEREAS, the Gators defeated the top two seeds in the tournament and put together a steady, courageous performance in the final game, a 43-33 victory over Saint Catherine's High School; and
WHEREAS, in winning the final game, the Gators also avenged two earlier defeats by the Saints and ended their season with a well-earned championship; and
WHEREAS, Saint Gertrude's victory is a tribute to the hard work and perseverance of the players, the inspired leadership of Head Coach Tammy Hedspeth, and the support of the students and faculty of Saint Gertrude High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Saint Gertrude High School basketball team on its championship season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Tammy Hedspeth in honor of the superlative season of the Gators from Saint Gertrude High School.
