965940649WHEREAS, on December 9, 1995, the Braves from Indian River High School brought home Chesapeake's first state football championship; and
WHEREAS, the Indian River Braves defeated C. D. Hylton High School of Woodbridge, 13-12, in a singularly exciting final for the Virginia High School League Group AAA, Division 6 state title; and
WHEREAS, led all year by team captains Sam Hardy, Mike Toliver, and Corey Holly, the Braves scored the winning touchdown, on a pass from James Boyd to Sam Hardy, with less than three minutes to play in the final game; and
WHEREAS, after finishing third in the highly competitive Southeastern District, the Braves, who finished with a season record of 12-2, came on strong in the playoffs to capture the state championship; and
WHEREAS, the inspired coaching of Head Coach Bob Parker, ably assisted by Scott Johnson, Jerry Laumann, and Phil Twine, created the teamwork, fortitude, and perseverance that carried the Indian River team to its triumphant season; and
WHEREAS, the success of the Indian River Braves will be shared and savored by the students and faculty of Indian River High School and by the entire Chesapeake community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Indian River High School football team on its first state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Bob Parker as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations on the unprecedented success of the Indian River High School Braves.
