HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 14
Commending George Albert Williams, Jr.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 8, 1996

WHEREAS, George Albert Williams, Jr., the Chief Deputy Clerk of the House of Delegates since 1977, will retire on June 30, 1996; and

WHEREAS, although a native of Philadelphia, George Williams graduated from Harrisonburg High School and earned his bachelor's degree from Lynchburg College and his master's degree from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, an ordained minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), George Williams has served as minister to several churches in central Virginia and for 10 years has served as the Associate Executive Secretary of the Virginia Council of Churches; and

WHEREAS, George Williams joined the staff of the House of Delegates as the Journal Clerk for House Clerk George R. Rich in 1968 and for the past two decades has served as Chief Deputy Clerk, first to House Clerk Joseph H. Holleman, Jr., and then to House Clerk Bruce F. Jamerson; and

WHEREAS, as Chief Deputy Clerk, George Williams supervises the work of the legislative operations staff, including the House Journal, Records, Indexing, and Enrolling and interprets the work of the General Assembly before various local, state, national and international groups; and

WHEREAS, George Williams has served on the legislative staff of the Virginia YMCA Model General Assembly and the American Legion Boys State; and

WHEREAS, during his long and distinguished service to the House of Delegates, George Williams has served under Speakers John Warren Cooke, A. L. Philpott and Thomas W. Moss, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his work through the church, George Williams is actively involved in his community, serving at various times as president and secretary of the Hanover Ruritan Club, as a member of the Mechanicsville Recreation Association, and as a member and officer of various Hanover Public School PTAs; and

WHEREAS, George Williams is a member of the American Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries, for which he has served as associate vice president and executive committee member and from which he received the prestigious Distinguished Service Award in 1992; has served as a member of the Legislative Management Committee of the Assembly on the Legislature of the National Conference of State Legislatures; and has served as a member of the board of directors of the Virginia Executive Institute Alumni Association; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate, gregarious and extraordinarily popular figure around Capitol Square for many years, George Williams' record of service to the House of Delegates, to the General Assembly and to the Commonwealth is unparalleled; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That George Albert Williams, Jr., be commended and congratulated on the completion of a stellar career with the House of Delegates; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to George Albert Williams, Jr., as an expression of the House of Delegates' heartfelt appreciation for his many years of invaluable service and best wishes for a long, rewarding and indisputably well-earned retirement.
