Commending the Nansemond River High School boys' basketball team.

WHEREAS, on March 18, 1995, the Warriors from Nansemond River High School in Suffolk claimed the 1995 Virginia High School League Group AA state basketball championship; and

WHEREAS, the state title, the Warriors' second in the past four years, was won in convincing fashion, an 84-57 victory over Northside High School of Roanoke County; and

WHEREAS, the Nansemond River Warriors, rebounding from a disappointing loss in the 1994 state semifinals, finished the season with a sparkling record of 26-2; and

WHEREAS, ranked number one in the state for much of the season, the Warriors lived up to their reputation by winning the Bay Rivers District regular season and tournament titles, sweeping the Region 1 tournament, then winning two games in the state tournament to capture the title; and

WHEREAS, under the expert tutelage of Head Coach Spencer Mayfield, who won his fourth state title, the Warriors relied on a potent combination of speed, defense, rebounding, and accurate shooting to win the state championship; and

WHEREAS, the sterling performance of the 1994-95 Warriors is a tribute to the spirit, teamwork, and dedication of the players, the skill of the coaching staff, and the unwavering support of the students, staff, and supporters of Nansemond River High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Warriors of Nansemond River High School on their second boys' basketball state championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Coach Spencer Mayfield in honor of the outstanding performance of the Nansemond River Warriors basketball team.
