WHEREAS, on December 30, 1995, the Virginia Cavaliers' football season ended in characteristic fashion, as Demetrius Allen, with less than minute remaining in the 1995 Peach Bowl, returned a University of Georgia punt 83 yards for the game-winning touchdown; and
WHEREAS, during a season on which they lived on the edge, the Cavaliers were three times on the wrong end of last-second heroics, watching as their opponents celebrated miraculous come-backs; and
WHEREAS, in no fewer than seven of Virginia's thirteen games, the outcome was in doubt until the final moments, assuring Cavalier fans of heart-stopping excitement throughout the 1995 season; and
WHEREAS, the occasional disappointments did little to dim the luster of the Cavaliers' season--a season that saw Virginia inflict the first Atlantic Coast Conference defeat on the seemingly invincible Seminoles of Florida State; and
WHEREAS, by defeating Georgia, 34-27, in the Peach Bowl, Coach George Welsh's Cavaliers achieved a top-20 national ranking, finished the season with a 9-4 record, and played in several thrilling contests in front of a national television audience; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the University of Virginia football team on an exceptionally exciting, entertaining, and successful 1995 season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach George Welsh in honor of the stellar performance of the University of Virginia Cavaliers.
