WHEREAS, the 1995 college football season began with high expectations for the Hokies of Virginia Tech; and

WHEREAS, after a shaky start, the Hokies lived up to those expectations, winning 10 consecutive games, defeating their traditional rivals from West Virginia University, beating Big East Conference nemesis University of Miami, and winning the Big East Conference championship with a dominant victory over Syracuse University; and

WHEREAS, a thrilling, come-from-behind victory over the Cavaliers of the University of Virginia capped a most successful and satisfying regular season for Virginia Tech; and

WHEREAS, the Hokies' reward was not long in coming, as the Virginia Tech football team was invited to participate in New Orleans' prestigious Sugar Bowl against the Longhorns of the University of Texas, one of the legendary college football programs in the nation; and

WHEREAS, relying on a stout defense, ranked as one of the best in the nation, and an opportunistic offense that took control of the game in the second half, the Hokies beat Texas convincingly in front of a national audience to complete the most successful season in Virginia Tech's history; and

WHEREAS, Head Coach Frank Beamer's Hokies, now ranked among the elite college football programs, have demonstrated to the nation the excellence of college football in the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
