1996 SESSION
WHEREAS, on November 3, 1896, a cornerstone for a new church was laid at what is now a busy commercial intersection in the Merrifield section of Fairfax County; and
WHEREAS, the members of the church, the Bruen Chapel United Methodist Church, will celebrate the centennial of their church by reflecting on a century of service to their community; and
WHEREAS, now located on Cedar Lane in Fairfax, the Bruen Chapel United Methodist Church, named in honor of its first pastor, William Livingston Bruen, has thrived through a century of growth and change; and
WHEREAS, the Bruen Chapel has a long history of community service through its active participation in such organizations as the Committee for Helping Others, a group that provides needy families and individuals with food, shelter, clothing, transportation and other essential services; and
WHEREAS, the Bruen Chapel participates in the chaplaincy program at Fairfax Hospital and in the Fairfax County jail ministry; and
WHEREAS, for 20 years Bruen Chapel supported the Child Development Center of Northern Virginia, which offers services to handicapped pre-schoolers; and
WHEREAS, Bruen Chapel sponsors and hosts a monthly luncheon for area senior citizens and lends strong support to Virginia Methodists for the Retarded, which offers both training centers and religious education to the retarded; and
WHEREAS, truly a valued asset to the community it serves, the Bruen Chapel United Methodist Church can reflect with pride on its first century as it embarks with high expectations on its second; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Bruen Chapel United Methodist Church on the occasion of its centennial celebration; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Bruen Chapel United Methodist Church in honor of its century of invaluable service to the Fairfax community.
