HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 4
Commending the Newport News "Kid Heroes."

WHEREAS, on Sunday, February 19, 1995, a group of Newport News children, ranging in age from 5 to 13, gave their elders a lesson in effective community involvement and good citizenship; and

WHEREAS, the "Kid Heroes," as they have come to be known, witnessed the mugging of an elderly woman after which a group of the children, Dune Gayles, Delvin Johnson, Shawn Stephenson, August Taylor, Calvin Williams, Jamarr Williams and Maurice Williams, chased the perpetrator and made note of his hiding place; and

WHEREAS, after the police were notified, the other children, Antonio Bell, Michael Carter, Tierra Davies, Demarcus Gardner, Shenell Pressley and Akeem Tate, showed the police where the thief had thrown the stolen purse; and

WHEREAS, as the direct result of the actions of these Newport News children, the mugger was apprehended, the victim recovered in a hospital and the area around the corner of 29th Street and Jefferson Avenue in the East End of Newport News became a little safer; and

WHEREAS, the spontaneous actions of the Newport News "Kid Heroes" are shining examples of what can happen when residents take responsibility for the safety of their community, when citizens are not afraid to "get involved" and when children show adults how to be responsible citizens; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the courageous actions of the Newport News "Kid Heroes" in assisting the police in apprehending a dangerous criminal; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to Antonio Bell, Michael Carter, Tierra Davies, Demarcus Gardner, Dune Gayles, Delvin Johnson, Shenell Pressley, Shawn Stephenson, Akeem Tate, August Taylor, Calvin Williams, Jamarr Williams and Maurice Williams as an expression of the admiration and gratitude of the General Assembly.
