966088252WHEREAS, James B. Tabb, Sr., the "dean of preachers" for the Williamsburg area and a well-known community activist, died on March 8, 1996; and
WHEREAS, a native of York County and a graduate of Virginia State University, James Tabb was pastor to Mount Ararat Baptist Church in Williamsburg and Rising Sun Baptist Church in Lackey and was a member of Mount Gilead Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, widely known for his eloquence, the Reverend Tabb was an articulate and inspirational speaker, a gift he combined with rare generosity, compassion, and humility to become one of the most popular and effective citizens of his community; and
WHEREAS, in addition to ministering to his parishioners at two churches, James Tabb was active in a variety of community organizations, including service as President of the Tri-County Ministers Alliance, past president of the Tri-County Pastors Council, and member of the board of directors of the Ecumenical Outreach Ministry; and
WHEREAS, the Reverend Tabb's influence in the community of Lackey was legendary, dating to his successful efforts to organize the Lackey Community Development Association, which, among other notable achievements, brought running water to the major part of the community; and
WHEREAS, the Reverend Tabb was also instrumental in the creation of the Charles E., Brown Park, which opened in 1978 with much-needed recreational facilities for the Lackey community; and
WHEREAS, a man dedicated to his pastoral duties, to his community, and to the cause of justice, the Reverend James Tabb leaves an indelible legacy of service to the many people whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of the Reverend James B. Tabb, Sr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James B. Tabb, Sr., as an expression of the deep and abiding respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
