WHEREAS, on a cold day in January, four young boys set off across a seemingly frozen reservoir in Newport News; and

WHEREAS, about 30 feet from shore, the ice gave way, and three of the boys fell into the water; and

WHEREAS, while two of the boys were able to return to shore safely, the third, 12-year-old Greg Falvo, was trapped in about 10 feet of icy water; and

WHEREAS, David Poole, passing by on his way home to Gloucester County, immediately responded, jumping into the water in attempt to rescue the boy, who was clinging to the edge of the ice; and

WHEREAS, the frigid water made movement difficult as David Poole struggled to reach Greg Falvo, but a second Gloucester man, John Register, Jr., arrived with a hose to use as a lifeline; and

WHEREAS, Newport News Police Officer J. D. Rock, responding to a 911 call, arrived to help David Poole and John Register, and through cooperative effort, the three men were able to pull the boy, who was suffering from hypothermia, to safety; and

WHEREAS, Greg Falvo, who recovered fully after a stay in a nearby hospital, owes his life to the quick, selfless, and heroic actions of three strangers, who without thought of personal safety rescued the young man from imminent peril; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend David Poole, John Register, Jr., and J. D. Rock for their timely and courageous actions in saving the life of Greg Falvo; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to David Poole, John Register, Jr., and J. D. Rock as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for their heroic action.
