WHEREAS, Anthony T. Lane, who served on the Fairfax County School Board for 24 years, witnessing, reacting to, and planning for the vast changes that occurred in the Fairfax County Schools during that time, died on December 16, 1995; and

WHEREAS, a native of Pennsylvania, Tony Lane earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and his law degree from the George Washington University; and

WHEREAS, one of the original members of the Fairfax County Crime Commission, Tony Lane also served on the Fairfax County Planning Commission from 1965 to 1972, including a stint as chairman, and as the Lee District representative to the County Federation of Civic Associations; and

WHEREAS, beginning in 1972, Tony Lane served on the Fairfax County School Board, including terms as vice chairman and chairman of the board and seven terms as head of the Budget Committee; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure on the School Board, Tony Lane played an important role in coping with the explosive growth of the Fairfax County Schools, which resulted in opening dozens of new schools, strengthening academic standards, establishing new magnet schools, and assisting schools and students with special needs; and

WHEREAS, drawing on his background and training as both an attorney and an engineer, Tony Lake brought discipline, efficiency, and an aptitude for practical solutions to the often long and contentious meetings of the School Board; and

WHEREAS, operating as both a professional and a parent vitally interested in the quality of the schools, Tony Lane's service to the Fairfax County School Board was marked by civility, integrity, knowledge, humor, and an invaluable ability to bring about consensus; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of Anthony T. Lane, a dedicated and accomplished Virginian; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Anthony T. Lane as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his lifetime of service to the youth of Fairfax County and the Commonwealth.
