HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 329
On the death of David Lorenzo Temple, Sr.

WHEREAS, David Lorenzo Temple, Sr., a widely known and highly respected community leader in the City of Richmond, died on March 6, 1995; and

WHEREAS, a native of King William County, David Temple grew up in the Church Hill neighborhood of Richmond, was educated in the Richmond Public Schools, was a graduate of the Van de Vyver Business Institute and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II; and

WHEREAS, David Temple retired in 1976 after a successful 45-year career as a life insurance underwriter but never retired from his many community activities in Church Hill and Greater Richmond; and

WHEREAS, for 36 years David Temple was a member of the board of directors of the Richmond Community Hospital including 30 years as secretary, and was a member of the boards of directors of the Richmond Opportunities Industrialization Center, the United Givers Fund, Meals on Wheels and the Museum for Black History and Archives; and

WHEREAS, devoted to his Church Hill neighborhood, David Temple wrote the "Church Hill Spotlight" for the Richmond Afro-American and was a member of the East End Advisory Committee and Neighbors of Chimborazo Park, the Church Hill Area Revitalization Team, the Church Hill Model Neighborhood Policy Board and the East End Crime Committee; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong member of the Mount Olivet Baptist Church, David Temple served 22 years as chairman of the Board of Deacons and as editor of the church bulletin; and

WHEREAS, a man singularly devoted to his Church Hill neighbors, David Temple leaves an unmatched legacy of community service to his neighborhood, his city and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of an exceptionally dedicated and effective community leader, David Lorenzo Temple, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of David Lorenzo Temple, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly's abiding respect for his memory.
