WHEREAS, Julian H. Rutherfoord, Jr., a member of the House of Delegates from 1948 to 1962 and a successful Roanoke businessman, died on December 6, 1995; and

WHEREAS, a native of Roanoke, Julian Rutherfoord, Jr., attended Jefferson High School, Chesapeake School, and Roanoke College; and

WHEREAS, a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Julian Rutherfoord, Jr., was commanding officer of the U.S.S. LST-616, and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters; and

WHEREAS, Julian Rutherfoord, Jr., represented the City of Roanoke in the House of Delegates from 1948 to 1962, where he served as a member of the General Laws, Insurance and Banking, and Manufactures and Mechanic Arts Committees and as Chairman of the Committee on Officers and Offices at the Capitol; and

WHEREAS, Julian Rutherfoord, Jr., was past president of Rutherfoord Insurance Agency and Surplus Lines, Inc., past president of the Roanoke Association of Independent Insurance Agents, and retired from Rutherfoord-Dill Corporation; and

WHEREAS, Julian Rutherfoord, Jr., was also past president of the Roanoke Kiwanis Club, the Roanoke Guidance Center, and the Roanoke German Club; and

WHEREAS, a charter member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, Julian Rutherfoord, Jr., was devoted to his family and his community; and

WHEREAS, an avid sportsman with an ever-ready dry wit, Julian Rutherfoord, Jr., was a true Virginia gentleman; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an exceptional and devoted citizen of Roanoke, Julian H. Rutherfoord, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Julian H. Rutherfoord, Jr., as an expression of the deep respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
