HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 314
On the death of Larry Cornett.

WHEREAS, Larry Cornett, a Powell Valley High School teacher and prominent Southwest Virginia civic leader, died on January 27, 1996; and

WHEREAS, a teacher of American government and history at Powell Valley High School for 20 years, Larry Cornett was the founder of the Peanut Football League and served as its commissioner for 26 years; and

WHEREAS, Larry Cornett was a former director of economic development for Scott County and served on the Big Stone Gap Town Council and the Wise County School Board; and

WHEREAS, Larry Cornett was a former member of the board of directors of the LENOWISCO Planning District Commission; and

WHEREAS, at the time of his death, Larry Cornett was serving as vice-chairman of the Wise County Board of Supervisors and as a member of the Virginia Employment Commission Board, to which he was appointed by Governor George Allen; and

WHEREAS, a man dedicated to his family, his community, and the Commonwealth, Larry Cornett leaves a lasting legacy of dedicated, effective, and committed leadership; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the death of a singularly valuable and accomplished Virginian, Larry Cornett; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Larry Cornett as an expression of the General Assembly's deep and abiding respect for his memory.
