WHEREAS, John Gilbert, a reporter and photographer for WSLS in Roanoke and one of the pioneers of television journalism in Virginia, died on January 21, 1996; and

WHEREAS, John Gilbert began working at WSLS, Channel 10, in Roanoke in 1953, only six months after the station went on the air, and he remained at the station for the next 42 years; and

WHEREAS, one of the first television newsmen to cover the General Assembly, John Gilbert witnessed and reported on an historic period of the General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, a skillful, tenacious, and thoroughly professional journalist, John Gilbert achieved legendary stature among reporters of his generation and acted as generous mentor to many television journalists of the next generation; and

WHEREAS, fondly remembered for his uncanny ability to discover and track a story, John Gilbert was one of the most skillful, popular, and professional television journalists of his time; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the death of John Gilbert, a man of humor, dedication, and accomplishment; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John Gilbert as an expression of the General Assembly's profound respect for his memory.
