HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 300
On the death of Marion Virginia Engle Hazel.

WHEREAS, Marion Virginia Engle Hazel, a strong and influential supporter of the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra and the Center for the Arts at George Mason University, died on November 19, 1995; and

WHEREAS, a native of Arlington, Marion Hazel, widely known as "Jinx," graduated from Washington-Lee High School and attended Western Maryland College; and

WHEREAS, a philanthropist and community leader for many years, Jinx Hazel contributed heavily to the expansion of the Fairfax Symphony and served as chairman of its board of trustees; and

WHEREAS, Jinx Hazel played a pivotal role in the development of the Center for the Arts at George Mason University, heading the initial fund-raising gala to support the center; and

WHEREAS, Jinx Hazel was appointed to the Virginia Commission for the Arts by Governor George Allen; and

WHEREAS, cited numerous times for her manifold contributions to the arts, Jinx Hazel received the first Women of St. Stephen's Award, which has been renamed in her honor, and the Northern Virginia Community Foundation's Founders Award, the 4-H Diamond Leadership Award and the Special Gratitude citation from The Washington Post; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated and effective advocate for the arts, Jinx Hazel leaves an enduring legacy of service to the cultural life of the citizens of Northern Virginia and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of Marion Virginia Engle Hazel; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Marion Virginia Engle Hazel as an expression of the General Assembly's abiding respect for her memory.
