WHEREAS, Susan K. Miller, a second-grade teacher at John B. Dey Elementary School in Virginia Beach, has been recognized as one of the outstanding teachers in the nation; and

WHEREAS, Susan Miller was named the State Geography Teacher of the Year and was one of 10 teachers chosen as National Geography Teacher of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Susan Miller, who also serves as academic coordinator at John B. Dey Elementary School, created the school's Geography Awareness Week; and

WHEREAS, among her other activities, Susan Miller has coordinated workshops at the state and national levels, including coordination of a geography bee and a CD-ROM Geography Workshop; and

WHEREAS, in one of her more notable efforts, Susan Miller created a school project that transformed the entire John B. Dey Elementary School into a "tropical rainforest"; and

WHEREAS, for such efforts, Susan Miller has been recognized as Nystrom's Virginia Outstanding Geography Teacher and received, in October 1995, the Distinguished Teaching Achievement Award from the National Council for Geographic Education; and

WHEREAS, Susan Miller's singular dedication to her students, commitment to excellence in elementary education, and creative professionalism make her a most deserving winner of Teacher of the Year honors; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Susan K. Miller on her numerous and well-earned teaching awards; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Susan K. Miller as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude for her dedication to the youth of Virginia.
