1996 SESSION
WHEREAS, Fairfax Hospital received its first patient on February 6, 1961, as a community-based, not-for-profit teaching hospital; and
WHEREAS, Fairfax Hospital today has grown into a 656-bed regional referral center for many medical specialties; and
WHEREAS, Fairfax Hospital, which saw the first successful heart transplant in the Washington metropolitan area in 1986 and recently witnessed its 100th, has also become a major center for liver, kidney, pancreas, heart and lung, and bone marrow transplantation; and
WHEREAS, Fairfax Hospital now ranks as the second-busiest obstetrical hospital in the nation, with more than 9,000 babies delivered annually, nearly 10 percent of the total for the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Fairfax Hospital for Children features Northern Virginia's only pediatric intensive care unit and the highest level of neonatal intensive care; and
WHEREAS, Fairfax Hospital serves as the Level 1 Trauma Referral Center for Northern Virginia and, with Inova Medical Aircare, provides emergency helicopter transport for victims of accidents and life-threatening illnesses; and
WHEREAS, Fairfax Hospital has a dedicated corps of volunteers and auxiliaries who have contributed almost 3 million hours of service and have raised and contributed over $7 million for needed equipment, facilities, and programs; and
WHEREAS, Fairfax Hospital was recently recognized, for the second time in three years, as one of the top 100 hospitals in the nation in an independent study by HCIA/Mercer Management Company; and
WHEREAS, the study cited Fairfax Hospital for its value to its customers, its high quality of care, and its efficient operation and long-term stability; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Fairfax Hospital on the occasion of its 35th anniversary of providing the best in health care to the citizens of Northern Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to Jolene Tornabeni, the administrator of Fairfax Hospital; to Knox Singleton, the president of Inova Health System; and to William S. Tennant, the chairman of the board of Inova Health System, as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations.
