HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 258 On the death of S. Page Higginbotham.

WHEREAS, S. Page Higginbotham of Orange County, a farmer, country lawyer and two-term member of the House of Delegates, died on November 2, 1995; and

WHEREAS, a native of Amherst County, Page Higginbotham earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia in 1936 and his law degree from the University of Virginia Law School in 1940; and

WHEREAS, Page Higginbotham served as Orange County Commonwealth's Attorney from 1943 to 1971 and was elected to the Virginia Constitutional Convention in 1957; and

WHEREAS, in 1987, Page Higginbotham was elected to the House of Delegates from the 30th House District representing the citizens of Orange, Madison, Greene and Culpeper Counties; and

WHEREAS, during his two terms in the House of Delegates, Page Higginbotham served on the Courts of Justice, Agriculture, and Militia and Police Committees; and

WHEREAS, known for his outspokenness and his individualism, Page Higginbotham championed the rights of the common man both in his practice of law and in representing his constituents; and

WHEREAS, Page Higginbotham was active in his community including membership in the Farm Bureau, the Orange County Volunteer Fire Company, the historical societies of Orange and Greene Counties and the Virginia Historical Society; and

WHEREAS, Page Higginbotham was credited with helping to start the first Orange County High School football team; and

WHEREAS, throughout a long and active career, Page Higginbotham amply demonstrated his affection for the people of the Orange County community, his dedication to his constituents in the 30th House District and his devotion to the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an able and distinguished Virginian, S. Page Higginbotham; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of S. Page Higginbotham as an expression of the General Assembly's deep and abiding respect for his memory.
