WHEREAS, January 22, 1996, marks the beginning of Ramadan, the Sunni (orthodox) Muslim holy month of fasting; and
WHEREAS, this sacred month of fasting represents the personal victory of men and women worldwide over their unrestrained appetites and urges; and
WHEREAS, Eid-ul Fitr is the three-day celebration at the end of the fast of Ramadan that commemorates this triumph over one's personal desires; and
WHEREAS, the Holy Qur'an, which was revealed by God to the Prophet Muhammad, is the spiritual wellspring that inspires and guides all Muslim people; and
WHEREAS, Virginia's Muslim community has contributed greatly to the moral, social, economic, and spiritual fabric of the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, it is only fitting that all Virginians be urged to take the time to understand and recognize the piety and richness of the Muslim faith and its traditions; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate January 22 to February 20, 1996, as the Muslim Holy Month of Ramadan in Virginia and urge Virginians to take time during this holy month to learn about and understand the tenets of the Muslim faith.
