HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 126 Offered January 22, 1996 Designating the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation as the Commonwealth's official entity responsible for organizing the 400th anniversary celebration of the first permanent English settlement in the New World. ----------

WHEREAS, created by the General Assembly in 1958, the Jamestown Foundation (now the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation) was charged with doing "all things necessary and proper to perpetuate the memory of the first permanent English-speaking settlers of Virginia and the United States"; and

WHEREAS, the Foundation was also directed, in 1986, "to administer, develop and maintain at Jamestown and Yorktown permanent commemorative shrines and historical museums"; and

WHEREAS, Jamestown is certain to be the center of attention in May 2007, as the nation celebrates the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in the New World; and

WHEREAS, the designated guardian of the Jamestown settlement, the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation is the logical and appropriate choice as the Commonwealth's lead agency in planning for the 400th anniversary celebrations, which will bring nationwide attention to Jamestown and to the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation as the official entity of the Commonwealth charged with the planning and implementation of the 400th anniversary celebration of the Jamestown settlement.
