SUMMARY:

Constitutional amendment; limits on length of service in the Congress (first resolution). Limits members of the United States Senate from Virginia to two terms (12 years) and members of the House of Representatives to six terms (12 years). The limitations apply to service for both consecutive and nonconsecutive terms. Service for a partial term does not preclude serving an additional 12 years. A person may serve 12 years in each house or a total of 24 years in the Congress. The limits apply to terms of service beginning on or after January 1, 1997.
