1995 SESSION
HB 2520 Sex offenders; registration; community notification.
Introduced by: James K. O'Brien, Jr. | all patrons ... notes | add to my profiles
SUMMARY:
Sex offenders; registration; community notification. Modifies Virginia's Sex Offender Registry law to clarify the obligation to keep the registration with the State Police current particularly with regard to change of name or address, and adopts community notification provisions based upon New Jersey's recently enacted “Megan's Law” The Department of State Police will be required to keep local law-enforcement up-to-date on the registration of sex offenders living in their jurisdiction. The Attorney General is to establish guidelines for assessing the risk that a registered offender will re-offend and establish procedures for implementation of the requirement that local law-enforcement provide notice to the community. The extent of the notice to be provided (i.e., the degree of dissemination) is dependent upon the perceived risk of recidivism.
