HB 1670 Pharmacists' authority to prescribe anticoagulants.
Introduced by: Harvey B. Morgan | all patrons ... notes | add to my profiles
SUMMARY:
Pharmacists' authority to prescribe anticoagulants under certain circumstances. Authorizes pharmacists employed in outpatient anticoagulation clinics or centers operated by hospitals to prescribe anticoagulants to patients of such clinics or centers in accordance with an outpatient anticoagulation protocol which has been approved by the Board of Medicine upon (i) the submission of such evidence as may be required by the Boards of Medicine and Pharmacy that the pharmacist is party to an agreement for anticoagulant-prescribing direction and supervision with a licensed physician who oversees the operations of the outpatient anticoagulation clinic or center and (ii) authorization to seek such prescribing authority by the administration of the hospital. The pharmacist will only be allowed to prescribe anticoagulants authorized by the written agreement with his supervising physician. Each pharmacist must disclose to his patients the name, address, and telephone number of the supervising physician, and that he is a pharmacist. The Board of Medicine is required to promulgate regulations for approval of outpatient anticoagulation protocols. The Boards of Medicine and Pharmacy will jointly promulgate regulations prescribing the required evidence of the anticoagulant-prescribing direction and supervision agreement between pharmacists and physicians.
