SUMMARY:
Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services; Virginia Consumer Protection Act. Codifies the operation, maintenance, and administration of the statewide toll-free consumer hotline by the Department. The bill also increases civil penalties under the Virginia Consumer Protection Act from $1,000 to $2,500, increases the maximum recovery for reasonable expenses incurred by the state or local agency from $200 to $1,000, and establishes a new civil penalty of $10,000 when “vulnerable” consumers are victimized under certain circumstances. All civil penalties are payable into the Literary Fund. The bill also contains technical amendments.
