WHEREAS, drum and bugle corps activities offer the young people of the United States and Canada the opportunity to participate in competition involving musical artistry and showmanship; and

WHEREAS, drum and bugle corps present musical shows that require not only musical ability but also drill design, choreography, drama, special effects, and brilliantly colored flags, streamers, and uniforms; and

WHEREAS, Drum Corps International promotes competition among drum and bugle corps throughout the country through its annual Summer Music Games Tour in 52 cities across the United States and Canada; and

WHEREAS, the culmination of the summer tour is the annual Drum Corps International World Championships, which are held each August and draw a television audience of over 14 million viewers; and

WHEREAS, the 1995 summer tour includes a competition on August 1, 1995, in the City of Salem and another on August 3, 1995, in the City of Hampton; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate the first week of August as “Virginia Summer Music Games Week”; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly encourage the citizens of Southwest Virginia and Hampton Roads to support and participate in this colorful, artistic, and exciting event.
