WHEREAS, the County of Hanover was divided from New Kent County on November 26, 1720, and named for the Electorate of Hanover, Germany, the province of King George I, of England; and

WHEREAS, Hanover County originally included the present-day Louisa County and part of Albemarle County; and

WHEREAS, Hanover County was once home to the Algonquian Indians and the site of Chief Powhatan's favorite hunting town, Orapax; and

WHEREAS, two of Hanover's colonial ports, Hanovertown and Newcastle, were each considered to be the Virginia State Capitol; and

WHEREAS, the struggle for religious freedom in Virginia began in Hanover County under the leadership of the Reverend Samuel Davies; and

WHEREAS, Hanover County was the birthplace and longtime home of Patrick Henry, “The Orator of the Revolution” and first Governor of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Hanover County was the birthplace of Henry Clay, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives for seven terms, United States Secretary of State, United States Senator from Kentucky and author of the Missouri Compromise; and

WHEREAS, Hanover County was once the home of General Thomas Nelson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence; Dolly Madison, wife of President James Madison; Edmund Ruffin, the agricultural innovator; and Thomas Nelson Page, author and diplomat; and

WHEREAS, the American, French and British armies all traversed Hanover County during the American Revolution; and

WHEREAS, Hanover County was the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War-Gaines Mill, Cold Harbor, Ellerson's Mill and Mechanicsville and numerous other skirmishes; and

WHEREAS, Hanover County is a vibrant, prosperous and beautiful area of the Commonwealth of Virginia, which includes the historic Town of Ashland and Randolph Macon College, and whose citizens appreciate its past and who strive for a great future; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the Senate and the House of Delegates commend Hanover County on the occasion of the 275th Anniversary of its founding; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution to be delivered to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors in honor of this milestone Anniversary of one of the Commonwealth's most historic communities and that it be displayed in the Hanover County Wickham Building for the citizens of Hanover County and that a copy be delivered to the Hanover County Historical Commission and the Hanover County Historical Society.
