LD2037759WHEREAS, in 1989, small businesses comprised over 90 percent of the 147,000 business establishments in Virginia; and
WHEREAS, small businesses have traditionally generated much of the economic growth and new jobs in the nation; and
WHEREAS, the number of women-owned businesses in the Commonwealth has grown significantly from about 57,000 in 1982 to almost 95,000 in 1987, an increase of 60 percent; and
WHEREAS, the gross receipts of these businesses rose by 240 percent over this period; and
WHEREAS, women-owned businesses are playing an increasingly significant role in Virginia's economy and overall economic growth; and
WHEREAS, the women who own and operate such businesses are vital and vibrant sources of information about business, microbusiness, or job-training; and
WHEREAS, there are numerous departments, agencies, commissions, boards, and other entities of the Commonwealth under the direction and control of the Secretary of Commerce and Trade; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the Secretary of Commerce and Trade be requested to ensure that women who are knowledgeable about business, microbusiness, or job-training participate in the development of the economic policies of the Commonwealth through the various departments, agencies, commissions, boards, and other entities of the Commonwealth under the direction and control of the Secretary of Commerce and Trade.
