SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 327
On the death of Steven Alan Colona.

WHEREAS, Steven Alan Colona, an 18-year-old volunteer firefighter from the Melfa area in Accomack County, was killed in the line of duty on December 27, 1994; and

WHEREAS, a member of the Melfa Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company for two years, Steven Colona was responding to an emergency when the fire department tanker he was driving overturned; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated and well-trained member certified as a Firefighter III, Steven Colona was the chief engineer for the Melfa Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company, responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the fire and rescue vehicles; and

WHEREAS, Steven Colona was also a trained Emergency Medical Technician, having recently completed Shock-Trauma Emergency Medical Technician training; and

WHEREAS, Steven Colona served as a 9-1-1 Dispatcher at the Eastern Shore of Virginia 9-1-1 Communications Center, answering and dispatching emergency fire and rescue calls and providing Emergency Medical Dispatch pre-arrival instructions to persons during medical emergencies; and

WHEREAS, Steven Colona's death, at such a tragically young age, is a reminder of the dangers faced daily by the thousands of volunteer fire and rescue personnel throughout the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Steven Colona leaves a lasting legacy of courage, selfless commitment, and dedication to the safety and welfare of his neighbors; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the untimely passing of Steven Alan Colona; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Steven Alan Colona as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his life of service to his community.
