1995 SESSION
LD9819000WHEREAS, on September 4, 1744, an act of the Virginia General Assembly provided for the division of Goochland County to form a new county, Albemarle, named after the colony's official governor in England, William Anne Keppel, the second Earl of Albemarle, England; and
WHEREAS, admired for its breathtaking natural forests and fertile region of farms and orchards, Albemarle County spans the heartland of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, each year, Albemarle is visited by thousands of tourists who come to revel in Virginia's past at its famous museums and historical sites; and
WHEREAS, among the most famous landmarks in Albemarle are Monticello, the stately mansion of Thomas Jefferson which is considered one of the nation's most important architectural designs and Ash Lawn, the simple, but graceful, home of his good friend James Monroe; and
WHEREAS, describing the panoramic vistas from Albemarle's rolling hills, Thomas Jefferson once wrote, "These mountains are the Eden of the United States."; and
WHEREAS, to visit Albemarle today is to be caught up in the best of eighteenth-century tradition blended with twentieth-century vitality; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the County of Albemarle, a place with a vivid past and vibrant present; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the chairman of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations of the county's historic 250th anniversary and best wishes to its over 68,000 residents for a glorious celebration.
