1995 SESSION
WHEREAS, Jackson E. Rozier, Jr., a retired major general in the United States Army and a member of "Virginia Heroes," died on October 29, 1994; and
WHEREAS, a native of the City of Richmond, Jackson Rozier was a graduate of Armstrong High School and earned his undergraduate degree at Morgan State University in Baltimore and his master's degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, Jackson Rozier began his military career in 1960, serving in Vietnam as deputy director for supply for the Cam Ranh Bay Support Command; and
WHEREAS, Jackson Rozier held command positions in Washington, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and in Europe, before being promoted to brigadier general in 1982; and
WHEREAS, in February of 1982, General Rozier, then stationed at Aberdeen, Maryland, returned to Armstrong High School in Richmond as part of Black History Month, urging students to "listen, learn, have the courage to admit mistakes, and go forward"; and
WHEREAS, promoted to major general in 1986, Jackson Rozier, as deputy chief of staff for logistics for the U.S. Army in Europe, was responsible for logistics to Army forces in West Germany, Italy, Africa, Greece, and Turkey; and
WHEREAS, often decorated during his career, General Rozier retired in 1990 with a Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, and many other honors, including 1993 induction into the U.S. Army Ordnance Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, in 1991, Governor Douglas Wilder designated General Rozier a member of "Virginia Heroes," an organization started by the late Arthur Ashe to urge students to concentrate on education and use the Virginia Heroes as role models; and
WHEREAS, during a life of notable and continuous achievement, General Jackson Rozier compiled a record of personal and professional integrity, perseverance, and accomplishment, making him a most worthy role model for young people throughout the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the untimely passing of a fine Virginian, Major General Jackson E. Rozier, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of General Rozier as an expression of the General Assembly's great respect for his memory.
