SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 293
On the death of Lenious G. Bond.

WHEREAS, Lenious G. Bond, a Norfolk civic leader and a moving force behind the revitalization of the City's Park Place community, died on January 8, 1995; and

WHEREAS, born in Norfolk and a lifelong resident of the City, Lenious Bond worked for 25 years to reinvigorate several of Norfolk's depressed neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, after failing eyesight forced him to retire from the Norfolk Naval Supply Center, Lenious Bond, who was born in the Huntersville section of Norfolk and lived in Colonial Place and Brambleton before moving to Park Place, dedicated his talents and energy to saving the City's communities; and

WHEREAS, Lenious Bond was one of the founders of the Southeastern Tidewater Opportunity Project (STOP) and was coordinator of the Norfolk Model Cities Commission; and

WHEREAS, Lenious Bond moved to the Park Place neighborhood in 1979 and immediately set about revitalizing a community plagued by poverty, crime, and a burgeoning illegal drug trade; and

WHEREAS, unifying and leading the residents of Park Place, Lenious Bond fought for more than a decade to revive the economy of the area and rid the neighborhood of the criminals who threatened its future; and

WHEREAS, as he had throughout his life, Lenious Bond, serving as president of the Park Place Civic League, gave generously of himself to improve the lives of his neighbors; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a singularly dedicated and irreplaceable citizen of Norfolk, Lenious G. Bond; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lenious G. Bond in honor of his lifetime of exemplary service to the citizens of Norfolk.
