Commending the Floyd County High School girls' basketball team.

Agreed to by the Senate, January 19, 1995
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 27, 1995

WHEREAS, in the 20-year history of the girls' Group A basketball state tournament, only two teams had won back-to-back championships; and

WHEREAS, now there are three, as the Lady Buffaloes from Floyd County High School won their second straight title with a resounding 77-41 victory over Buffalo Gap High School; and

WHEREAS, in capping a perfect 29-0 season with a state championship, the Lady Buffaloes also won their 56th consecutive game; and

WHEREAS, led by Coach Alan Cantrell, who has compiled a remarkable 85-2 record during his three seasons at Floyd County High School, the Lady Buffaloes stampeded their 1994 opposition, winning their games by an average margin of 35 points; and

WHEREAS, in the state tournament, Floyd County faced Fluvanna County, one of the two other teams to win consecutive titles, in the semifinals, prevailing 56-42 in a hard-fought game; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Buffaloes' opponent in the title game, Buffalo Gap, has appeared in six state tournaments in the past 12 years and lost narrowly to Floyd County in the 1993 championship, but was no match for the Lady Buffaloes this year; and

WHEREAS, relying on their pressing defense, the Lady Buffaloes won their second state title and established Floyd County High School as the dominant Group A girls' basketball program in Virginia; now, therefore, be it
