SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 239
Commending the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church.

WHEREAS, on October 9, 1994, the congregation of the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, in Chantilly, Virginia, celebrated the centennial of the founding of the church; and

WHEREAS, in 1894, the Pleasant Valley community consisted mainly of farmers, who found it increasingly difficult to travel over poor roads to the nearest church in Arcola; and

WHEREAS, at its founding, Pleasant Valley had 53 members, who by 1895 had built and dedicated a sanctuary on one-half acre of donated land, a building that was to serve the congregation for a half-century; and

WHEREAS, the membership of the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church has changed with its surroundings, as western Fairfax grew from an agricultural region to a booming suburb of Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, the development of Dulles Airport and the building of interstate highways have further changed what was once known as Pleasant Valley, but throughout the stresses caused by such momentous changes, the Church has remained a constant reminder of the importance of community; and

WHEREAS, after a century of existence, with new and expanded buildings, many dedicated pastors, and hundreds of parishioners, the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church enters its second century as a strong, growing, and vital part of the lives of its congregation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church on the occasion of its centennial observance; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Pastor Matthew William Jones IV in honor of this milestone event in the history of the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church.
