WHEREAS, Peggy D. Vetter, the founder of one the first newspapers in Herndon, was named the 1994 Woman of the Year by the Herndon Business and Professional Women’s Club; and

WHEREAS, a native of Indiana who began her journalism career in Michigan, Peggy Vetter moved to Northern Virginia in the mid-1970s and soon thereafter founded the Herndon Observer, which at the time was the only newspaper in town; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Observer grew along with the town, moving from a semi-monthly to a weekly publication; and

WHEREAS, through the years, Peggy Vetter employed dozens of local women, many with young children, and established what may have been the area’s first corporate day-care center; and

WHEREAS, Peggy Vetter sold the Observer in 1990, but she remains a reporter for the paper and has covered countless meetings of the town council, the planning commission, and the numerous boards and commissions that affect the lives of Herndon residents; and

WHEREAS, Peggy Vetter also serves on the board of directors of the Herndon Chamber of Commerce, is an active member of the Herndon Rotary Club, and has devoted substantial time and energy to youth sports programs and various fund-raising efforts; and

WHEREAS, throughout her long career in journalism and community service, Peggy Vetter has served well the citizens of the Herndon community and is an entirely appropriate and deserving selection for Woman of the Year honors; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly join with the citizens of Herndon in saluting Peggy D. Vetter on her many accomplishments and her well-earned honors; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Peggy D. Vetter as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and best wishes.
