Expressing the sense of the General Assembly concerning plans for Interstate Route 66 and Interstate Route 73.

WHEREAS, the 1991 U.S. Department of Transportation Appropriations Act included provision for the study of an interstate highway from Detroit to Charleston, SC. to be known as Interstate Route 73; and

WHEREAS, the 1994 U.S. Department of Transportation Appropriations Act included provision for the study of an interstate linking the east and west coasts of the United States, herein referred to as Interstate Route 66; and

WHEREAS, the passing of the North American Free Trade Agreement and the progress on the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs will result in changes in national and global trading and transportation patterns; and

WHEREAS, different communities in Virginia have passed conflicting individual recommendations for these interstate highways; and

WHEREAS, the entire western, southwestern, and central part of Virginia will benefit when these interstate highways are developed; and

WHEREAS, a coordinated effort is necessary by all communities in the areas to be affected by these interstate highways to secure this benefit to these areas; and

WHEREAS, that coordinated effort should focus on routes which maximize the benefits of linking these two interstate highways; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That all planning for Interstate Route 73 and Interstate Route 66 be linked and coordinated; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the route Interstate Route 66 should generally follow a route entering Virginia at Interstate Route 64, in the Alleghany Highlands, following it to its intersection with U.S. 220, then south to the Roanoke Valley, there continuing east along the U.S. Route 460 corridor to an eastern terminus at the seaport of Norfolk; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Interstate Route 73 generally follow a route entering Virginia near Bluefield and the U.S. Route 460 corridor, following that general corridor through Giles County to Montgomery County, then intersect Interstate Route 81, which should be widened in the process, then follow Interstate Route 81 to the Roanoke Valley, then proceeding south through Henry County following generally the U.S. Route 220 corridor.
